UTK and Kindergarten are exciting first steps for our youngest learners at Franklin Elementary School.  Franklin’s UTK & Kindergarten program provide a wide range of educational experiences and opportunities for students to develop their academic and social skills. With age specific curriculum and skill building activities, our students are well prepared to continue their elementary school journey as a Franklin Fox! 

A typical day in UTK & Kindergarten begins with our morning routine of greetings, breakfast in the classroom (BIC), and calendar review.  These routines then lead our young learners to begin the morning language arts block. Our school is currently using Benchmark Universe to help guide instruction and develop students' literacy skills which include reading skills, phonics, writing, listening and speaking. In math we follow the Eureka Math curriculum which aims at developing conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts.  Our UTK & Kinder students also have several opportunities during the day that include movement, which is added to all of the curriculum areas. In addition, the students also have a recess break and lunch break.

Kindergarteners also receive arts instruction though our supplemental music and visual arts programs which are supported by Friends of Franklin.

With the support of Friends of Franklin, our school is able to provide annual rotations of Art, Music and Dance instruction to our students. We are proud to offer these supplemental programs as Arts education has been shown to improve children's confidence, creativity, academic performance and motor skills.

There are many ways to be involved at Franklin! You can attend any of our family and adult-only events , volunteer as a room parent or for classroom events, and/or join the Friends of Franklin board or volunteer on a committee. Among the many opportunities, Friends of Franklin also has a New Family Mentor program to help new Franklin parents become part of the Franklin family.

For Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK), children must turn 4 years old on or before September 1 of the school year.

For Kindergarten, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1 of the school year.

Franklin offers three after-school programs, Franklin Kids, Boys & Girls Club, and Beyond the Bell.

The Food Services Division works with schools to ensure that healthy meals and/or snacks are always available to students, whether they are at school, off campus for a special activity, participating in a school program taking place outside the regular school day, or involved in some other special circumstance. With the support of Friends of Franklin, Franklin Avenue Elementary is able to provide an Intervention Coordinator/Instructional Coach to serve our students and faculty. In addition to providing training to our teachers and TA, this position oversees our learning programs.

Students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPS) are serviced by dedicated staff. These interventions include but are not limited to speech and hearing services and reading remediation. For more information on IEPS visit LAUSD’s dedicated Department of Special Education Website

In addition, Gifted students receive differentiated instruction in their classrooms based on various research-based teaching models. Lessons focus on varying instructional levels and interests to provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum to all students. Find out more here.

Permits are issued only on a space-available basis, with priority given to students who qualify for SAS (School for Advanced Studies) during the annual application period. 

Parents must provide the required documentation for the applicable permit for which they are applying. Intra-district permits include Child Care Permits, Parent Employment Permits and Continuing permits.  Intra-district permits must be renewed annually and are contingent upon space availability each year.

Franklin is excited to provide a Psychiatric Social Worker, Ms. Jacobo! Ms. Jacobo works to equip the entire Franklin community with socio-emotional learning and promote mental health in and out the classrooms to develop individual and community resiliency through social-emotional workshops in the classroom, for teachers, and for parents.

In addition, Friends of Franklin has a Social/Emotional committee of parents. The committee provides workshops for parents to provide opportunities for continued learning and support as our students grow.

SAS stands for Schools for Advanced Studies. This means Franklin has received an SAS designation from LAUSD for their exemplary Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) implementation. Find out more about the SAS eligibility criteria.
